Nose - Rhinoplasty

Nose Reshaping or Rhinoplasty is a common cosmetic procedure that can have profound results on a person’s appearance and self-confidence. Rhinoplasty can accomplish numerous changes including reducing the overall size of the nose, removing the “hump”, narrowing of the nostrils, refining the tip of the nose, or improving the angle of the nose and upper lip.  Surgery to reshape the nose creates a more contoured appearance and a nose that “fits” the face in a more natural and attractive manner.  As in all facial procedures, the goal is to have a natural and well balanced result.  Unlike facial procedures, Rhinoplasties are typically more identity changing.  For this reason, Rhinoplasties are commonly performed on younger patients who have not yet completed their identity formation and are more psychologically flexible.  There are no wedding pictures, large network of friends, spouses, children, or grand children to wonder why you look different.  The optimal age is late teens to early twenties.  In the older patient population, Rhinoplasties must be performed with an emphasis on less significant changes in order to preserve the patient’s identity.  When performing a Rhinoplasty, the plastic surgeon will also evaluate any potential breathing problems that can be corrected at the same time.  The procedure can be performed under local sedation or general anesthesia and most patients can return to normal light activities in 7 to 10 days.
